This is a large (22" by 40") Asian rubbing. It depicts a warrior on a horse. It is matted and framed, ready to hang. Truly an amazing and unique piece. Real rubbings of Guan Yu are getting quite rare.

I believe it is a rubbing from a stele of Guan Yu, the most famous military general in Chinese history and lived during the last part of the Han Dynasty (a stele is a stone or brass tablet). He lived from 160-220 CE and was considered a God after his murder. He was known for the weapon he carried which is pictured in your rubbing, know as "guan gong dao". In the 14th century book, Romance of the Three Kingdoms it is referred to as The Green Crescent Blade. The legend was he killed a green dragon with it and it took the spirit of the dragon which made it all powerful. His horse was called "Chi tu ma" or Red Hare and legend said it could travel 1000 miles a day. Lots of legends back then!
